Was it fate that Donald Trump was elected president?

Some of my friends say that if he hadn’t been elected people wouldn’t be nearly as galvanized as they are now. Maybe horrors like Trump appear to wake us up and shake us out of our complacency. Some say that maybe, ultimately his election will end up being a good thing, because it will inspire us to change.

Our destiny, our fate, is a product of our karma. Karma is context, it’s the ties that bind us to the rest of the world. Our race, our class, our gender, where we were born, all of that is our karma.

Karma is not a punishment or reward, it’s a consequences of the choices made and the acts of God exacted upon our ancestors. We are born into our karma, and what that karma is, isn’t our choice.

When Gwenneth Paltrow said that it was fate that she become a movie star, that she knew all her life that she would be one, she was right. If you’re born a beautiful blonde to Hollywood royalty parents and Steven Spielberg is your godfather, then yeah, movie star is likely to be in your karma.

But she could’ve gone against her karma. She could’ve been a veterinarian. Or a hobo. And we as citizens of the world, and we as individuals, can all go against our karma too.

In other words, we can all become veterinarians or hobos.

According to tarot numerology, 2017 is a 10, and corresponds to the Wheel of Fortune (WoF). The WoF marks a time when you get to shake up your destiny. When the wheel is still spinning, all the cards are in play, and the outcome isn’t decided yet.

There’s a strong feeling this year that big changes are a foot, that we’re being guided, sucked into our final teleology.

It’s a time of fateful encounters and strange coincidences.

We are given our karma, but shaping our destiny is our task in life. It’s our turn. We are alive now, and now we are generating karma for future generations.

America’s karma led us to elect Donald Trump. Your karma may have led you into debt, into heartbreak, into exultation, into a great job or a miserable job, but this is the year to shift that karma, friends.

If you’re doing what you want to be doing and have the winds at your back, use your karma to soar to new heights.

If you’re miserable and frustrated, make this a year of clearing karma. Bat that shizz out of the sky like animals do to drones.

Remember, you are where you are because of the choices made by your ancestors. But you are powerful now, you’re making choices for the future generations of the planet and future iterations of yourself.

Move towards love, move towards connection, move towards grace and beauty and blessings for all beings of the earth.

  1. Wonderful Amanda. What a lovely post. A nice way to see the possibilities of a tragedy like The Expletive-Elect’s “ascension.”

Thank you for adding 2017 as 10 and discussing the Wheel of Fortune. I sometimes call Major Arcana X the “Doubt” card. I’ve found Doubt & Confidence to be a fruitful axis. Everyone thinks they want confidence, and it can produce a lot of success. And yes, excessive doubt can sometimes be debilitating. But I’ve also found that creatively Confidence can produce a sort of “excellence,” but within a more limited domain. I believe it is Doubt that can be the seed of the most radical innovation. Sometimes we fear Doubt. I say embrace it. Confidence can have aggressive power and follow Western power standards, but I’d like to see more people embrace Doubt, be OK with uncertainty, and ultimately have the courage to think new thoughts.

Certainly if The Expletive-Elect had more Doubt and less Confidence, this would be a less terrifying time.

Wishing you the best of 2017’s Amanda. Thank you always for your wisdom and beauty.

    1. Hey Michel! Thanks for your note! I love the idea of the Wheel of Fortune as the Doubt and Confidence card. A very interesting perspective. The idea that doubt could be a seed of innovation is something a lot of people will probably find encouraging. The trick I suppose is to figure out how to harness the anxiety that doubt brings and turn it into something that motivates, rather than causes one to procrastinate and avoid. Maybe the answer is to meld doubt and confidence together. To make the Wheel of Fortune the “Beginner’s Mind” card. If we’re curious about how things are, and want to engage with them, we don’t have to worry so much about whether or not we will succeed or fail, we’re just interested in how it works. Sending blessings for 2017! x
